Help From Herman

note: read this poem aloud:

A Legacy

There is a man
Whose name I found
Engraved upon a stone
And though I’m sure his family’s sad
He’s left them all alone,

I must confess I am in debt
To this man’s fine name
For think of it when in a bind
And you’ll laugh like life’s a game

If you just can’t get around,
Your car’s a pile of junk,
Just be glad your name is not
Herman Ebenezer Funk.

And if you’re bad at basketball
And you will never dunk
Just be glad your name is not
Herman Ebenezer Funk.

When someone drops their bowling ball
On your toe with a “klunk”
Just be glad your name is not
Herman Ebenezer Funk.

Climbing up the mountain side
You tred upon a skunk
Just be glad your name is not
Herman Ebenezer Funk.

And if you are held up by
A mugger and a punk,
Just be glad your name is not
Herman Ebenezer Funk.

Your boss decided to fire you
Your presentation stunk
Just be glad your name is not
Herman Ebenezer Funk.

So you see the value of
The name of one who’s past
I hope he will not mind so much
Wherever he’s at last.

For Herman is to us
An inspiration plain
For he has left his name in stone
To help us in our pain.

Interesting that this stone and poem originate in the Emmett Valley. Would that such elegant poetry be shared more widely!
Also interesting that the "secret word code for the day is "caldw" standing for Emmett's close neighbor, Caldwell

If you are in the army,
And you have to share your bunk,
what better mate to wish for
than dear Ebenezer Funk.
